The first thing I noticed about the Bushnell Medalist is that it is extremely simple and easy to operate, in fact, you could use this right out of the box without even reading the directions if you chose to do so. I like that, too many products are made so complicated that they are inconvenient to actually use. This is not the case with the Bushnell Medalist Laser Rangefinder. I definitely do recommend you read the instructions though, as you may miss some of the cool features that this rangefinder offers.

The Bushnell Medalist is intended to be a more economical rangefinder than the PinSeeker but still offering PinSeeker technology. It seems to accomplish that goal very nicely as we had no trouble being able to zero in on flags an even the 150 yard markers in the fairways. This rangefinder proved to be pretty stout but when the distance gets long, you may have to incorporate the PinSeeker mode to zero in on the flag. PinSeeker mode, if you are not familiar with it, will give you multiple ranges. If you are trying to pick up a flag at a long distance, PinSeeker will give you the range to the flag AND to the trees or objects behind it. No guessing whether you are ranging the right target, it gives you both.

In our experience the Bushnell Medalist performed quite well on the golf course and we had no trouble ranging up to around 300 yards for a flag stick and around 500-700 yards for trees. It’s rated to go up to 1000 yards if you are ranging a reflective enough surface but let’s get realistic, what good is ranging 1000 yards on a golf course do for you? Weather conditions can affect this of course, as with any laser rangefinder.

Who Should Buy the Bushnell Medalist Rangefinder

The Bushnell Medalist laser rangefinder is a perfect choice for the golfer who wants a quality name brand rangefinder that incorporates some high end technology but at a reasonable price. The Medalist is significantly cheaper than the PinSeeker 1500 but still offers PinSeeker technology, which is nice. The Bushnell Medalist is simple to use and quite compact measuring 1.7 x 4.5 x 3.8 inches and you will barely feel it in your pocket or bag at a featherweight 9 ounces.

One look through the eye piece of the Leupold RX-1000 laser rangefinder will convince most people that this is a high quality range finder. The image is much more like looking through a good riflescope rather than a range finder, which is very desirable compared to some of the lesser quality range finders that I have experienced. The Leupold accomplishes this by using very high quality optics, which is a great foundation for a great rangefinder.

The Leupold RX-1000 features 6x magnification and an outstanding bright red LED display that stands out at both dawn and dusk which makes it very desirable compared to the standard black optics that many of the competitive rangefinders offer. The LED display has adjustable intensity and can be tweaked for your specific conditions. Another desirable feature for a hunting range finder is Leupolds True Ballistic Range (TBR) system that takes into account elevation changes to allow you to adjust for an uphill/downhill shot angle.

No bigger than a pack of cigarettes, the Leupold will easily tuck into your pocket and when you combine this with the easy to use controls and 1000 yard range capability then you have a great laser range finder from a high quality company.

Who Should Buy a Leupold RX-1000

The RX-1000 is an ideal choice for a hunter who is seeking a high quality laser range finder that will work well under all but the most extreme ranges. Those who prefer not to have to read a 100 page manual just to figure out how it works will appreciate the ease of use and simple operation that the Leupold RX-1000 provides. A great all around choice for a hunting laser range finder at a very reasonable price.

Pristine image quality allows the RX-1000 TBR to serve as your full-time optic while the cutting-edge laser and processor generate the fastest, most reliable readings ever produced. The True Ballistic Range feature factors environment and rifle or bow ballistics to give you accurate ranging information. Packed with features never before offered at this price, the Leupold RX-1000 TBR Compact line significantly raises the bar on function and performance.

The Leupold GX-II Digital golf laser range finder is one of the most coveted rangefinders in its class. A golfer of any skill or experience level can immediately begin using this unit and seeing drastic improvements in his or her game. It provides the utmost in accuracy while also providing the kind of valuable input you used to only receive from well paid caddies.

The Leupold GX-II rangefinder provides pin ranges at up to 350 yards and provides 6x magnification. For reflective objects the range increases to 750 yards and for trees you can range at up to 600 yards.

To operate this laser range finder you just need to tap the power button. You can also switch into scan mode for a continuous readout of distances as you scan the surroundings by simply holding down the button. Additionally, the quick menu allows you to access all of the features you are interested in the most as easily as possible.

However, there is much more to this golf laser range finder than that. Using TGR or True Golf Range technology, in combination with slope adjustments, your personal inputs and atmospheric conditions, you'll get extraordinarily precise measurements that are fine tuned to your game, power and playing style.

You might think that all of the above features and functionality already make this golf laser range finder one of the premier options in its class. Well, taking things a step further towards convenience and assistance is the Club Selector option. With your inputs, it will automatically select which clubs are appropriate for the distance and conditions measured.

There are few other rangefinders on the market today that provide as much detail and insight as the Leupold GX-II. When you're looking for more from a rangefinder than just a quick distance projection, you'll be satisfied with the diverse functionality of this unit.

Leupold’s GX-II has all the features of the GX-I, plus is the only golf rangefinder to provide accurate ranging information that matches your personal striking distances to the slope of the course and current atmospheric conditions. Two more proprietary technologies are merged in this unit: Club Selector and TGR™. Leupold’s Club Selector™ relies on the striking distance of each golfer  to determine the appropriate trajectory of the ball to give the most accurate horizontal distance possible. TGR™ combines the information from Club Selector with uphill or downhill slope, elevation and temperature, to fine tune this distance to a level no other rangefinder can match. The result is incredibly accurate ranging, no matter what the conditions, customized for your game.

Nathan T asked:

I am thinking about getting some kind of a range finder to help my golf game, I don't know if it will help but I like cool gadgets.

Do you have to get a membership to skycaddie in order to use it for golf courses?

Another question, would you think that a laser rangefinder or a Golf GPS is better all around?

Whatever your answer, which do you think is the best laser range finder or GPS to buy?

Our Answer

Wow..Nathan this is the kind of question that if you were to ask 10 people, you will probably get 5 that answer one thing and then 5 that answer something else. There are pros and cons to both laser rangefinders as well as golfing GPS units.

GPS units seem to be "cooler" and GPS is hot right now but they have some cons too. They aren't as accurate as you would like and can be off by as much as 10-15 yards depending on the unit or the course. They can have issues on days when it is overcast or cloudy, this is minimal but it happens. You also need to have your course mapped into the GPS if it isn't already there and you pay yearly membership fees along with fees to download courses etc. Add this up and sexy suddenly can become not so attractive in a hurry.

Laser rangefinders are simpler and not quite as sexy as a gps but they work well in about any weather condition. They don't require that the course be loaded into them and the best thing is you can use it for other things than golf courses. You can use it to hunt or for photography or simply to entertain the kids. It's a judgement call as to which way you want to go. Simple and dependable or sexy and still dependable most of the time.

As for a recommendation, it's hard to say because I don't know what you value the most but I prefer a laser range finder like the Nikon Callaway series.

The Nikon Callaway LR800 Laser Rangefinder is an intermediate model in the Callaway lineup and will provide fast and accurate distance measurements up 800 yards. This range finder is a golfing specific rangefinder featuring "First Target Priority Mode" which will measure the range to the target closest to you. This is ideally suited for measuring the distance to the pin on a golf course. The Nikon Callaway LR800 features fast and simple one touch operation and has a waterproof LCD backlight. This unit is capable of ranging different targets for up to 20 seconds with just one push of the button, you just move from object to object.

The Nikon Callaway LR800 range finder is also desirable because it is a small and compact laser rangefinder so no big and bulky equipment to stow away in your bag or cart. It's ideally suited for golfers who want a high quality range finder but do not want to pay more than they need to. 800 yards should be adequate for most golfing needs and it comes in an attractive, compact and affordable package.
